The Art of Jewellery Photography: Capturing Brilliance and Detail

When it comes to jewellery, a fantastic picture is sometimes worth more than the jewellery itself!

In an industry driven by aesthetics and fine details, the ability to capture the sparkle, elegance, and craftsmanship of jewellery is crucial. Exceptional jewellery photography does more than just display a product; it tells a story, evokes emotion, and inspires desire. For discerning customers, the right image can make all the difference between browsing and buying – especially in the competitive online platform.

Not all jewellery photographers are created equal and while I am known for my humble approach to most things, when it comes to jewellery photography, I am confident at being one of the leading jewellery photographers on the Sunshine Coast.

For me it’s not only an expert eye for detail, mastery over lighting, and a deep understanding of the artistry behind each piece, I look further to see how I can elevate my jewellery photography to an entirely new level.

For example, in my work with Taboo Fashion Agency, I am fortunate to see some fabulously exotic pieces from Turkey. I take my time to consider how to display the piece or range and incorporate ideas that can also showcase the symbolic or cultural meaning behind the jewellery. I also think about the target audience – who is buying this jewellery? What’s important to them? And the colours also dictate how I can best showcase the jewellery, so it’s not only eye catching but interesting and displays all the intricate detail.

Another key factor is keeping things within budget for clients. While white backgrounds often look incredible for jewellery photography, it also requires a lot of ‘fakery’ and editing work post shoot which can be costly. I am mindful of my clients, their budgets and am committed to finding practical and cost effective solutions that also deliver great results.

Right now, I’m loving raw cut crystals, silver and gold drop earrings and all the incredible bracelets, rings, necklaces and anklets that are on trend for Spring and Summer 2024/25. Displaying these on gorgeous, natural settings and utilising sandstone plinths, rocks and other organic backgrounds has been so enjoyable. You can check out just some of the imagery in my website gallery or on my Instagram.

Great Product Photography

Great Product Photography – It all starts in the ears!

Communication is the first step in understanding what’s needed when capturing my client’s products perfectly. I spend a lot of time tuning in to clients so that I can understand what kind of photographic looks they are aiming for. This helps me build a vision in my eye and also tells me what kind of props and styling I need to bring to the shoot. I am also of the opinion that making the photo shoot a collaborative experience delivers the best results!

A great product shot is one that can be seen clearly – even as a thumbnail image. This is why photographing on white backgrounds works well for catalogues and online/ecommerce businesses. This is definitely an area of speciality for me, having extensive experience in photographing shiny jewellery on white backgrounds (reflections are tricky!)

In addition to clarity, the image needs to convey to the viewer the key selling points. For example, is it ethical, organic, industrial or high quality? Who is the demographic?  This information assists me in creating a shoot that will ensure the viewer perceives the product in the way the client wants.

For me, the end result is when the photo really makes the product look as good, if not better than in real life! As someone who is focused on the environment, I love the digital aspect of photography – there’s no chemical use and much less waste. I also really enjoy being alone in a studio, honing my creativity and applying my skills to capture a great image.

Welcome to Fyre Photography

My new website is finally here! A true labour of love that’s been some time in the making, I’m so thrilled to be able to showcase my work and all the wonderful products and art that my clients create.

Living and working in Jinibara Country is a privilege and it was really important to me to honour this in my website along with the diverse and wonderful LGBTQ+ community. Welcoming everyone and embracing all is a vital part of my personal and business ethos.

Over the last few years my photography has evolved. I’ve honed my skills in jewellery and fashion photography and have been doing some great work with a range of clients on their exciting projects including, tea, finger limes, lithium batteries, organic nappies and so much more.

Working with the extraordinarily talented artist, BJ Murphy and Libby Harward from munnimbah-dja has been a highlight in both my year and career. More news about BJ’s ninyangurra exhibition and future works to come soon.

Spending time with these inspiring people, also opened my eyes to venturing into more art projects and I’m excited to now offer photography for artist portfolios. Located so close to Maleny (the art hub of the hinterland) I am lucky to be a part of such a creative community that’s home to many talented artisans.

Please keep visiting my site as I’ll be regularly updating it with new photos and providing highlights of those talented folk that I’ll continue to collaborate with.

If you’ve got a photography project that you’d like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I’d love to hear from you.
